EYFS

At St James, our Early Years includes Nursery (3 - 5 year olds) and Reception.
Early Years plays a fundamental role in preparing our children for the rest of their education and for them to be contributory citizens to society in the future. Our EYFS curriculum, which is underpinned by our school curriculum vision, has been designed to suit the needs of our children and changes to suit specific cohorts and needs of the learners.

We follow a themed based approach that is linked to a variety of texts. These texts ensure children meet a variety of characters, settings and types of tales. Theme based learning enables our children to engage in a range of ideas, interests and also exposes children to cultural capital. We have areas of continuous provision throughout the environment that are based on children’s interests and needs. We enhance these with resources linked to children’s next steps and interests, along with resources to develop skills and expose children to new and previously learnt vocabulary.

As an Early Years teaching team we read, research and constantly update and develop our own knowledge. In particular Alistair Bryce Clegg and Greg Botterill have inspired us to pursue a genuinely play-based approach and helped us shape our planning and provision.

In line with the Early Years Statutory Framework, we provide children with a broad and ambitious curriculum. Our curriculum is driven by the characteristics of effective learning, Playing & Exploring, Active Learning and Creating & Thinking Critically.
