Music

At St James Primary school we strive to build bright futures, enabling all children and adults to reach their full potential in mind, body and spirit. Music confirms our understanding that there is something beyond ourselves. Our music curriculum is fully inclusive for all learners.  In a unique way, involvement in music provides a rich variety of opportunities for acquiring and developing a wide range of the musical personal and social skills which our modern world needs. Music in St James focuses on the enjoyment of music, creativity, listening and singing. All children get a chance to learn a variety of musical instruments in Key Stage 2.

Music at St James is a well-planned, progressive curriculum based on the National Curriculum and the Model Music Curriculum 2021 using Sparkyard. Music knowledge organisers show progression from early years through to year 6 and beyond. They identify the key knowledge and vocabulary that children learn. Music lessons consist of; playing instruments, focussed listening to music, singing and composition.

Children in years early years and KS1 learn to play percussion instruments; 3 and 4 learn the recorder, in year 5 they are taught to play a transposing wind instrument by NMPAT teachers and Year 6 play Xylophone and Garage Band.
